China Visa Requirements

All visitors traveling to mainland China, whether for business or pleasure, require a visa. Citizens of most countries are permitted visa free entry into Hong Kong for up to 90 days. Please see the Chinese Embassy Website for the most current visa information.

Can I apply for a visa at the port of entry?

No. Visas should be acquired before your date of entry.

What type of visa should I apply for?

"Tourist" visas are issued specifically for the purpose of travel for pleasure, while a "business" visa generally permits a traveler to engage in normal business-related activities. A letter of invitation is required to apply for business visa.

How long is my visa valid?

Single-entry visas are generally valid for 3 months from the date of issuance and permit you to stay in China for a maximum of 30 days. Most people need only to apply for a single-entry.

How long will the visa process take?

The costs and the length of time to process a visa vary from country to country. Please check the website for the Chinese Embassy in your country to find the information applicable to you. Application forms can usually be downloaded from the web site.

Can I apply for renewal of my visa at the Consulate General?

Chinese visas are printed and can not be renewed. Applicants should arrange their journeys before they apply for visas and fill out the application forms completely and truthfully.

What documents should I submit when I apply for a visa?

  • One completely and signed Visa Application Form of the P. R. China
  • One recently taken 2x2 in. photo showing entire face and without a hat on.
  • Original passport with at least 2 blank visa pages and valid for at least 6 months beyond the date of application
  • An invitation letter if you apply for business visa.
